Park Royal Mental Health Centre recently celebrated the opening of the Busy Brewing Café, a new service user-led initiative made possible through Pitch Perfect funding – the Trust's innovation programme designed to enhance service user experiences and support creative ideas from staff.

The launch was marked by a sunny outdoor celebration, bringing together staff, service users and guests to enjoy free coffee and mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the service.

Speaking at the event, Claire Murdoch, Chief Executive shared how immensely proud she was of both the team and the service users who helped bring the café to life. She highlighted the positive impact the project will have in creating meaningful opportunities and helping talented service users develop skills and confidence that can support future employment.

Special thanks were given to Aila Bruce, Head Occupational Therapist and Michelle Pratt, Occupational Therapist, whose vision and dedication helped turn the idea into reality. Michelle spoke about the difference the café will make to service users, providing valuable opportunities for recovery, personal development and vocational growth.

The celebrations also included the unveiling of the café's new logo, designed by a service user, showcasing the creativity and talent that exists across our services.

More than just a café, the Busy Brewing Café has been created as a therapeutic and vocational space where service users can gain real-world experience and develop transferable skills in customer service, baking, food hygiene, stock management, marketing, money handling and graphic design. The café will provide meaningful activity, training opportunities and links to community employment services, helping people build confidence and take positive steps towards education, volunteering and employment.

The project was developed in response to a recognised need for more purposeful and vocational activities within inpatient settings. By creating opportunities for people to learn new skills in a supportive environment, the café aims to strengthen recovery journeys, promote inclusion and improve wellbeing.

Any income generated by the café will be reinvested into therapy projects, helping to enhance ward environments and create further opportunities for service users across the service.

Aila's proposal demonstrated how innovation doesn't always require large-scale change. Sometimes, transforming everyday spaces can create dignity, opportunity and hope for those using our services.
