Last Thursday, CNWL's Clinical Director for Addictions, Dr Jeff Fehler, delivered a keynote address at a community seminar hosted by the Consulate General of Romania in London.

The event brought together healthcare professionals, community representatives and consular staff to explore addiction, recovery and the importance of accessible support services within diverse communities.

Dr Fehler, Consultant Psychiatrist at CNWL, led the discussion by outlining what addiction is, how it develops and the ways it can affect individuals and families. He emphasised that addiction is a treatable condition and highlighted the range of evidence-based support and services available to those seeking help.

The seminar provided an opportunity for CNWL to engage directly with the Romanian community, supporting greater awareness of addiction services and encouraging open conversations around what can often be a stigmatised topic.

Dr Fehler was joined by a panel of speakers who contributed additional perspectives:

• Riyad Karim, Assistant Director for Community Engagement and Health Equity at NHS England (London Region), spoke about the importance of building trust between communities and public services.
• Cornel Silva, Psychotherapist and Professional Coach, explored the psychological aspects of addiction and recovery.
• Nicoleta Crivat, author, shared a personal account of supporting a family member through addiction. Her book, The Chambermaid – Life Seen from Behind the Mirror was also launched during the event.

Reflecting on the seminar, Dr Fehler said: 

“This was a valuable opportunity to engage with the Romanian community and explore addiction — not only the harms, but also the journey to recovery. Events like this are essential in raising awareness, reducing stigma, and helping people understand that support is available.” 

The event also highlighted CNWL’s continued commitment to improving access to addiction services and strengthening relationships with diverse communities across London.
