Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust (CNWL) has earned the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Gold Award, the highest badge of honour for employers demonstrating exceptional support for the Armed Forces community.

Achieving gold is the result of a multiyear journey, reflecting the steps CNWL has taken to create a forces-friendly workplace from recruitment practices to tailored policies for reservists, veterans and military families.

One of the key benefits available is paid special leave. Reservists can take up to 10 days of paid leave each year to attend annual training commitments, while cadet force volunteers can receive up to one week to attend camps and activities. These policies help colleagues balance their military commitments alongside their NHS careers.

During Armed Forces Week, we offered career coaching sessions for local cadets, drawing on the expertise of Trust coaches who regularly support staff with career development, interview preparation and professional growth. The Trust also welcomed Jim Maskell from the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance for a dedicated learning event for colleagues.

CNWL has also played an active role in shaping and promoting the new national NHS Armed Forces training programme. Colleagues contributed to the development of the training and we have supported its rollout across the organisation. The Trust also extends access to Mental Health First Aid training and Recovery and Wellbeing College courses to local cadet units.

CNWL proudly employs colleagues from across the Armed Forces community and continues to encourage staff to share any Armed Forces connections during recruitment and employment. This helps to make sure colleagues can access the support and networks available to them.

The Trust's commitment extends beyond its own workforce. CNWL encourages partner organisations to sign the Armed Forces Covenant, including West London Mind and Posturite who signed the covenant following discussions with the Trust.

A huge thank you to everyone who has contributed to this achievement.
