If you think your child may have autism or ADHD, speak to a GP, health visitor, SENCo, or another professional involved in their care. With your consent, they can make a referral.

SHINE will then send questionnaires to parents, your referer, professionals, and where appropriate, young people aged 13 and over.

Once all forms are returned, our clinicians will review the information and let you and your GP know whether an assessment is recommended or if SHINE is not the right service for you at this time.

A SHINE assessment is a detailed look at your child's development and needs. It includes additional questionnaires, information from professionals involved in your child's care, and an appointment with your child and family.

Our specialist team will review all the information, focusing on your child's strengths and needs. After the assessment, you will receive a written report with the outcome and recommendations.

If a diagnosis is given:

You will receive a report with recommendations, and we may refer your child to other services where appropriate.

If a diagnosis is not given:

This does not mean your child has no difficulties. The assessment findings can still help guide support at home and school.

Support after diagnosis:

Families can access local post-diagnostic support without a referral. We also recommend sharing the report with your child's SENCo to discuss support and reasonable adjustments.
